What to Expect in GCAS Virtual ATP CTP

If you are working toward an Airline Transport Pilot certificate, the ATP Certification Training Program (ATP CTP) is a required step. At Gulf Coast Aeronautical Services, the academic portion can be completed in our FAA-authorized virtual classroom, then finished with simulator training at one of our centers.

Here is what to expect.

The big picture

Virtual ATP CTP covers the same FAA-approved ground school curriculum we teach in person. You complete about 30 hours of classroom academics online, then schedule roughly 10 hours of fixed-base and full-motion simulator training in a Boeing 737-800, Boeing 767-300ER, or Airbus A320. Simulator modules are completed within 60 days of finishing ground school.

Class size and format

Remote virtual classes are kept small, limited to 6 students at a time. Training runs live over Zoom, so you are in a real classroom with an instructor, not a recorded course you click through alone.

What you need on your end

Before day one, make sure you have:

• A desktop, laptop, or tablet (Mac or Windows) with working video
• The Zoom application installed
• Reliable high-speed internet
• A quiet space free of distractions for each session

What the academics cover

Topics include aerodynamics, automation, adverse weather, air carrier operations, transport airplane performance, professionalism and leadership, runway incursion avoidance, stall prevention and recovery, high altitude operations, and crosswind takeoffs and landings in adverse weather.

ATM knowledge test prep

The ATP CTP is a prerequisite for the FAA Airline Transport Pilot Multiengine (ATM) knowledge test, but the course itself is not designed to prepare you for every ATM question. When you enroll with GCAS, Sheppard Air ATM study access is included. We recommend starting that study at least two weeks before your first class day.

After ground school

Once academics are done, our team schedules your simulator modules at a GCAS training location (including DFW, Las Vegas/Henderson, or Orlando, depending on aircraft and availability). That is where you complete the hands-on portion and finish the course.

Who can enroll

Typical entry requirements include an FAA Commercial Pilot certificate with instrument and multiengine land ratings, or qualifying military equivalent experience, or an equivalent foreign CPL with multiengine instrument privileges, plus the ability to read, speak, write, and understand English. TSA requirements also apply for eligible U.S. or approved foreign applicants.
